A new plant gets its start from a fertile seed and sends roots into the soil, which is usually devoid of other plant growth. This primary plant then extends runners outward on top of the ground and flowers emerge near the outermost tip of each runner. After the flower petals have wilted, a fully opening seed head releases copious amounts of feathery seed plumes. This pattern is repeated yearly by each plant until a dense mat is formed.
